Chess
A historical board game played with two opponents.
Opponents
Players of a game representing opposing armies.
Chess Board
A board with 64 alternating black and white squares. A chess board consists of rows and columns known as files and ranks.
Capture
To move onto a square occupied by an opponent piece. The opponent piece is then removed from the board. The king cannot be captured.
Check
Check is when a piece attacks the opponent king. A player must say, "check" when attacking the opponent king. The opponent must remove the king from check if possible. One way is to move the king out of check to a safe square. Another way is to block the attack with a team piece. The third way is to capture the attacking piece.
Checkmate
Checkmate wins the game. A player announces "checkmate" when the opponent king is unable to get out of check. When a king is being attacked and cannot move to a safe square, or a piece cannot move to block the check, or the attacking piece cannot be taken, checkmate has occurred.
Castle
To move the king and the rook to opposite sides of each other. Castle is used to safeguard the king.
En Passant
En Passant\on pûsson\ means in passing. On the first move, the pawn may move one or two squares. En Passant happens when a pawn moves two squares on it's first move. The opponent pawn then captures the pawn as if it only moved one square.
Pawn Promotion
A pawn is promoted when it reaches the last row of the opposite side. A pawn can then become a queen, rook, bishop or a knight. Most choose to become a queen, since she is the most powerful piece.
