The U.S. Army's T800 Comanche Engine

"The T800 represents the greatest leap in helicopter engine technology since the T53 was introduced in 1954"

....LTC Robert P. Birmingham....T800 Product Manager

The T800 is a 1300 shp turboshaft engine developed initially for military helicopter applications. In 1988, the U.S. Army selected the Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company (LHTEC), a 50-50 partnership between Allison and Allied Signal, to complete the development and qualification fo the T800 for the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter. In 1993, the T800 received both its U.S. Army qualification and FAA certification. Subsequently, the U.S. Army awarded LHTEC a contract to develop a T800 growth derivative to provide a 12% increase in shaft horsepower. The Army believes that the T800's thrust-to-weight ratio, specific fuel consumption, tolerance to sand, dust and dirt ingestion and improved maintainability features position the T800 as a strong candidate for re-engining older aircraft.
